Oxytocin

Also known as: OXT, Love Hormone, Bonding Hormone, Syntocinon

Oxytocin is a 9-amino acid neuropeptide produced in the hypothalamus with diverse roles in social bonding, trust, stress reduction, and sexual function. Exogenous administration is used therapeutically to improve social cognition, reduce anxiety, and enhance intimacy.

Half-Life

~3–5 minutes (IV); ~30–60 minutes (intranasal, CNS effects persist longer)

Route

Intranasal, SubQ, IV

Category

Cognitive Enhancement, Sexual Health & Libido

Key Benefits

  • Enhances social bonding and trust
  • Reduces social anxiety and fear of rejection
  • Improves autism spectrum symptoms (social cognition)
  • Reduces cortisol and stress reactivity
  • Enhances sexual arousal and intimacy
  • Promotes maternal behavior and bonding
  • May improve depressive symptoms
  • Appetite suppression and metabolic effects

Mechanism of Action

Oxytocin binds G-protein coupled oxytocin receptors (OXTRs) throughout the brain (amygdala, hypothalamus, reward circuits) and peripheral tissues. In the CNS, it reduces amygdala reactivity to social threats, enhances reward from social interaction, promotes trust and prosocial behavior, and attenuates cortisol/HPA stress response. Peripherally, it stimulates uterine contractions, milk letdown, and modulates gut motility. It interacts with the dopamine and serotonin systems to influence mood.

Dosing Protocols

Social/Anxiety Protocol (Intranasal)

Dose
20–40 IU
Frequency
As needed (not daily long-term)
Timing
30–60 minutes before social interaction
Cycle
Use as needed; avoid chronic daily dosing

Chronic use may downregulate endogenous oxytocin production

Intimacy / Bonding Protocol

Dose
10–20 IU intranasal or 1–2 IU SC
Frequency
As needed
Timing
30–45 minutes before intimacy
Cycle
Situational use

Very low SC doses (1–2 IU) mimic natural peaks

Side Effects

  • Mild uterine cramping (avoid in pregnancy)
  • Nasal irritation (intranasal)
  • Headache
  • Potential emotional over-attachment or jealousy amplification
  • Nausea at high doses
  • Rare: hyponatremia at excessive doses

Contraindications

Contraindicated in pregnancy (stimulates contractions). Avoid daily chronic administration which can desensitize oxytocin receptors. Use with caution in cardiovascular disease.

Storage

Store at 2–8°C (refrigerated). Intranasal spray: stable for 28 days once opened at room temperature. Keep away from heat and light.
